NARRATIVE
In groups you created a performance of a fairytale story using four styles of Narration.
- A narrator
- Actor stepping out of character to narrate
- Actor speaking in 3rd person
- Singing narration
Thinking questions...
- Explain what you did and why?
In my group it me was me, Naomi, Ruarui, Ellis and JJ
We done our remixed version of Humpty Dumpty.
I narrated the story whilst JJ came out of character to narrate and spoke in third person about what he was doing. and how he ended up falling down from the wall which it turned out to be because he was smoking to much weed, got a little bit to high and fell off the wall. Me and Naomi sang/rapped some narration though the piece and made it sound urban. we made the decision to perform the nursery rhythm different because we felt it would be funny and appealing to watch for others the same age. Because we gave Humpty a back story that explains his whole situation, which we thought was funny because we never know why he truly fell and there's loads of reasons why he could have.
- Why did Brecht use narration?
narration is used to constantly remove the audience from the action and emotions. to detach them from the performers to ensure they are always aware that this is a performance. this is done thought placards with information of the given circumstances such as time, place and even location or other relevant information. Music, narration and talking in third person is also used to relay information to ensure the audience understand the message behind the performance. i think this is a useful technique as it helps to make sure that your message is truly heard where as other styles of theatre you can get lost in the performance and think about lots of different things and themes within the piece. this forces your views to be heard and thought about.
