Political Protest Evaluation

Influences / Stimuluses

My group and i felt very strongly against injustice towards individuals with learning difficulties such as ADHD, dyslexia and health care. We've all experienced people in our lives who just wasn't helped properly either by the NHS or schools and this fuelled our passion and influences in our piece.

Notes

photos of information that we combined through our independent research

We printed out little cards with factual information on to give out to our audience.

My Evaluation

As a group we researched news, facts and statistics regarding mentall health. This gave us a foundation for our piece. Everything we done was surrounded by our research from facts and stories we found, influenced every desision we made. We believed strongly that in someways the NHS is flawed within helping individuals with mentall health and we wanted to get this across to our audience.

My roles was to show that someone within the health system also treats people with mentall health disability wrongly. In the sense that how a patient was treated differently than the another patient who had a physical disability. In our performance we wanted to show that this behaviour is a catalyst and that acting this way within the health service can transfer to others doing the same or worse which helps people to treat mentall health as a taboo subject. Our aim was to show that a mentall health condition should be treated just as importantly as a physical condition and that mentall health should be openly talked about and should have decent care within the NHS.

I think that our performance was performed in quite naturalist way but involved Brecht techniques, signs and breaking the fourth wall, coming out of character to talk to the audince  helped them to understand both patients thoughts feelings and views on their situations. We were showing a realistic situation that's happens to people on a daily basis were local GPs and doctors show a lact of care towards patients and the disappointment expressed by people about the level or care shown towards them and others they care about. I think by doing it that way it added a shock value because people don't expect to see people being mistreated right in front of them, were as I think if we done our protest in a more typical view our audince wouldn't have been as sympathic and cared as much. Doing it in a performance style  makes our work more relatable to people because they can relate the situation we shown to them, showing anxiety, depression, physical and mentall discomfort and how people treat you. You immediately think you don't want to be treated like this, this is not right. From the very beginning people in the audince had positive body language towards me I was smiley and happy giving off the impression that I was really nice and would probably be a good person to talk and confide to seeing as I worked in a doctors surgery (GP) as a receptionist. And as soon as I started talking to Naomi the audiences perception of me changed, I could see she was in clear distress and I treated her as if she was abit odd or dulls ion just because she couldn't speak and I couldn't physically see anything wrong with her. I could tell people viewed me differently in a more negative light because they didn't see that coming just as a fact people aren't very educated on mentall health unless they or someone close is experiencing it. I think people automatically views someone within the health care profession at a high standard.

I think my group made an impact on people in different ways. Some people stayed to watch the whole performance and told people to watch the beginning where Naomi was running towards my desk to to ask for help but she couldn't talk. People found interesting and distressful that she had tape on her mouth and I heard people coming up with their own thoughts as to why it's there like. Some said she's mentall trap so she can't express herself, some said anxiety and some said she could be having a break down. It was interesting because a lot of people seemed really engaged and became quiet as soon as they realised we were performing. However because it is a serious subject some people were uncomfortable. I hearsd one girl say " Nahh this is to deep, I can't watch this". Although we wanted people to stay, watch, listen and learn I know it's probably even effecting some people personally and they don't speak of it. And to see people in distress or being mistreated can either provoke different feelings of anger and even people not wanting to deal with those types of feelings.

I believed my group was successful in sharing a political thought with passion and having a clear distinct way of showing it in a creative and engaging way. We had loads loads of information within our piece and we also shared information on sheets and gave them out. We used our space effienctly making sure we used what was there: a desk for the receptionist, the eating area as a waiting are and the wall outside the new theatre as a doctors room.
I think that space awareness wasn't really a flaw because we worked around it. We didn't realise that moving around May be hard when working in an area with people walking about or standing to watch our performance.
Overall Iam really happy with me and my groups performance as I think we discussed and shared our views in an interesting and challenging way and to also make people think differently about things they may not pay much attention to or learn something new that can better the society is an amazing feeling.

The Most Horrific Evaluation

Evaluation

Our first two performances were different in dynamics for example when we were performing in front of the rest of our year group I feel that it was more funnier and easier to us as performing and them because they knew he play and just seeing how our version was performed is exciting in itself. When we performed in front of a few year 13's it wasn't the same because you instantly could tell who was enjoying the play and who wasn't, so that plays on your nerves because you can loose site in what your meant to be doing which is representing people and being a source of information. When you see people confused or bored it can make you over act or underpreform. One student at the end mention that some people need to just sell it more and make bolder choices and don't shy a way.
The things mentioned a lot was to remember your lines and when you say them know what your saying and mean it, don't 'milk it' (say it just to say it).
The little conversation we had at the end I found helpful because it allowed me to really think about how I express my lines and my characterisation behind that.

Our final performance I think went well  the audience were engaged and everything went quite smooth. At the end where we got to speak to the parents and friends about what they wrote as the most horrific that the feel strongly towards or have heard on the news you got to see that the audience straight away was engaged with our message.

We used a lot of Brechtian techniques from current music and changing the lyrics to something that was relevant to our play like Ruari making up that rap about the TV presenter who turned out to be a pedophile. Which I think that he done very well because he got all the information about the guy we need in order to inform the audience of the situation and done done it in a way that shows people are unaware of the seriousness of the topic. The rap comes across thats it's meant to be funny but us as an audience know that however you could take it either way and find it funny even though it's based on something that really had happened. I think after hearing the rap and letting it just sink in you realise the seriousness behind it and it really gets you to think like what type of person things that funny because in all seriousness it's disgusting.
We used placards to show who we were and also to give signals to the cast and audience like cheer and boo. We had a narrator to informed us what was going on from our own actioning and others this is very Brechtian because there's no illusion to his work.

The paired I really like were Déjà and Eve playing A and B because they were true representations of typical girls from Essex who cared and worried more about themselves than others. They didn't care about what was going on around them the only time they seemed interested about the TV presenter was when one of them mentioned "he never done anything to you did he?". I think the way they played A and B was very well thought out. I think they told their section of the story very well.

In learnt that you can perform political theatre in what ever style you please whether that's in a more theatrical style or a political protest way. I think it depends on what you want to achieve but I think it's an interesting way to explore and showcase your work. I definitely believe that in a way a lot of theatre has a political feel to it just because everything in life is surrounded by decisions and wrong from right. Theatre as a whole makes you question things, political theatre is just a diffrent structure of performing and informing an audience.

I have enjoyed working on political theatre as I feel that it's always exciting to be part of something that has comments, opinions, arguments and solutions because in a way it's the same as real life nothing is glorified and made up taking you into a fictional fantasy world. There's so many people in the world it's interesting to represent someone and their ordeals.

The Most Horrific

The play 'The Most Horrific' is a collection of the most horrific events that has taken place within society that a lot of people turn a blind eye on. like .....

Gay rights, asylum seekers, suicide, pedophilia and other controversial subjects.

The format of the play is very interesting, nobody has names accept for letters A-D because they are just representations of certain stereotypes. The only names mentioned in the play are factual ones like obama and the Ugandan lesbian because only important information is mentioned in the play, this is because the play is political and the writer's intentions were for the audience to learn about some of the situations and take into light whats going on around us.

A and B are a reflection of ignorant individuals who are unaware of anything taking place accept for things that are self indulgent or funny. C is the representation of the media and how they truly just dump us down by filling and bombarding us with material products, celebrities and lustful desires. We can access anything through our technology now a days but to what extent do we use it for anything truly useful or intellectual other than social chat rooms and shopping websites. D is like a factual source that tells us about the most horrific events and finally the narrator come across to me like an observer of everything.

It's as if people hear things and then just get on with their lives and not think about it again, which a lot of people fall victim to because we as individuals believe that we cant do anything by ourselves we have no voice to change anything or make a difference. If something isn't happening in front of you or physically involves you its so easy for you to switch off the TV if you don't like what your hearing and disconnect yourself form social problems and affairs. This is why i love the fact that were performing it in Brechtian style because were becoming informers instead of becoming a character. We want our audience to be engaged and aware of the horrific situations, instead of seeing our work and then not truly understand it.

MY SCENE

B: What about the other stuff? (b is very clueless)

A: The most most horrific?
what the most most horrific

B: Yeah

A: Google it (rudely)

B: What, is that what you did?

A: No, i told you i heard it on radio 4. they did a special program on it. His rise and fall. It was brilliant. I mean revolting. It was revolting. (ditzy)

B: What, tell me

A: No i dont even want to think about it. just make ( strudels shoulders)
(doesn't want to acknowledge the program because how it made her feel)

B: I've got reception, tell me

Tutor time activity: Should theatre be censored?

In September 'Exhibit B' opened in London.

Synopsis:

Described by Peter Brook as ‘an extraordinary achievement’, this haunting installation sets out to subvert a disturbing phenomenon, turning the notion of exotic spectacle on its head.

Exhibit B
critiques the ‘human zoos’ and ethnographic displays that showed Africans as objects of scientific curiosity through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Translated here into twelve tableaux, each features motionless performers placed in settings drawn from real life. Collectively they confront colonial atrocities committed in Africa, European notions of racial supremacy and the plight of immigrants today.

As spectators walk past the exhibits one-by-one, to the sound of lamentations sung live by a Namibian choir, a human gaze is unexpectedly returned.

Theatre used to be censored, however it's not anymore and we live in a society where we promote freedom of speech and expression. We watch plays about racism, violence and sex. We have plays by Edward Bond and Sarah Kane; surely we have become an un-shockable nation?

Do you think that 'Exhibit B' should have been cancelled or not? What are you justifications for your thoughts?

If you agree - do you think that plays with particularly 'offensive' topics should also not be shown?

DISCUSS - listen and respond to each other.

Although many were disturb by the piece and believed it was a mockery to african decedents many whom had an issue with the exhibition did not see it. A lot of people believed that it was subjection of black people all over again repeating history for others to view as entreatment. even though this is far from the intentions of the creator but i believe that maybe their should have been some kind or dialogue or narrative to information the audience and others of what was happening. this work was intended to be viewed as art and to inform people of the brutal racism and fascination towards africans at that time. however i believe that if this is art, why couldn't it be held somewhere that is known for showcasing art or even rent a building because using venues that host other events such as theatres like the barbican can really confuse people of the intentions of the piece. A lot of people felt that their ancestors were being degraded all over again instead of showing something with information for other to learn from. it seems that black people didn't do much according to history except for being slaves and prisoners which is far from the truth, this sparked outrage amongst the public because this is all that we hear.

i don't think that Exhibit B should have been cancelled because i think that it's important to show innovative expressive work. If no one pushed boundaries we wouldn't talk or explore touchy subjects and break boundaries. i think there were plenty of things featured in the exhibition that was new and shocking about the human zoo's that if it wasn't showed people would of been unaware of. i think that this is the first time that art has been so provocative and unapologetic that the public don't know how to react or react positively purely because people are usually scared of new things. but if this way of thinking and sharing information happened more often we'd be a much more knowledgeable and better society.

during this discussion many people in the class had different views. some people thought that the exhibition should of stayed on whilst other disagreed. i understand both views. one in being to learn and move forward you need to be aware of history but then on the other hand  what about the history that is never shared or mentioned. Or what about the same names mentioned in black history month like their aren't others worthy of being mentioned. i black people didn't do great things. i think that many were just angry for the same views being shown over and over again. the exhibition was different but the information wasn't. in the class it was clear that this art work caused a lot of confusion and angry amongst students whether being black, white or mixed because some students who were white talked about how they were ashamed that it was once their race that done such horrific things whilst other students spoke about how annoying it is to hear repetitive information.

"‘To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker. It is just as criminal to rob a man of his right to speak and hear as it would be to rob him of his money.’" - Frederick Douglass

HOMEWORK TASK: Is Brecht still relevant today?

Watch this video and write a personal response to:

 Is Brecht still relevant today?

Consider:
  • Should we still study him?
  • Is Epic Theatre out of date?
  • Do audiences want to watch this style of theatre?

i believe we should still study Brechtian theatre because its a style of acting that is different to other techniques formed by other theatre practitioners. i think that there are of course individuals who would love to watch epic theatre because of the rich authentic style of it. epic theatre will always have you thinking and questioning throughout the whole performance. epic theatre will always have you on your toes, the audience would be going on a journey with the characters as the story progresses but will not form emotional attachment to characters but the moral message of the play. Brecht was an exciting and truly different playwright for example he took a situation like motherhood in "Mother Courage and Her Children" and explored her decisions in which others find odd but can see in the play that she always had different options but its up to the audience to figure out why she done what she did.

i don't believe it is out of date because his quotes and techniques are still used today.
bertolt-brechts-quotes-3.jpg

i think some people will appreciate this style of performance more than others because his work and way of thinking encourages a new point of view. People have the opportunity to learn something new and help others because in the world your not alone, your actions affect others too.

The Threepenny Opera,

Mother Courage and Her Children
,

some people are ignorant and don't care for change even if its for the better. epic theatre forces people to think whether they decide to do anything productive after or to act otherwise is up to the individual.

Grub first, then ethics.
- the reflection of how some people think and showing that you wont get anywhere if you don't prioritise whats truly important.

Everyone needs help from everyone.
- people shouldn't be Capitalists and indulge on their on selfish needs because political decisions and personal antics effect others like a butterfly effect and influences a generation

Poverty makes you sad as well as wise.
- being impoverish or less fortunate in life can make you realise and see things from a different prospective. you can notice everything negative going on in the world because of the level of injustice and neglect you face everyday compared to others that are more fortunate who can choose to ignore factors because it don't have anything to do with them.

READ and RESPOND... Dennis Kelly on Political Theatre

You will be using this article in week 2.

Dennis Kelly said...

"...political theatre is a complete fucking waste of time."

Is he right?

Q - Write a response to this article. What is your opinion?

I don't believe it's a waste of time. I believe that political theatre is very important and plays a significant role in society. Political theatre helps to put out interesting views and opinions about something that they feel needs to be address. If we didn't have political theatre I think people would be quite closed minded and not open about things that they don't really know about. Of course theatre just can't change the world or how people think indecently but I think it does have an affect for the good. Good things and
Improvements will happen but in due time, change doesn't happen over night .

In the first workshop you discussed the article that interviewed Kate Tempest.

She said...

‘We live in crazy times. You can’t tell a story without it feeling political’

Review the article again and respond to this quote specifically. Do you agree?

I completely agree people find it a lot easier and authentic to write about what they know because it's more relatable and honest. A lot of Kate's work she mentioned is "fiction that comes from a very real place". Even if some one doesn't intend for their work to come across as political, it feels like it because there's always some sort of problem or dilemma that a person/stories holds. Everything contains this feeling of right and wrong and choices to make that can be contraverisal so people relate it to having a political theme.
